On the new site, they state

As our way of saying thank you for visiting The Scientist's redesigned website, we're making every area of the site free until January 10th [2006]. Enjoy access to over 20 years of archived information and a host of fresh, exciting new web features, at no cost.

The blogs can be found at http://www.the-scientist.com/blog/ as linked above, and they actually go back to June 2005.
