various ideas about the future of science and computing

As part of the National Research Council's (NRC's) Renewal activity, they have produced a foresight report:

Looking Forward: Science and Technology for the 21st Century

Microsoft Research did a visioning activity that produced a report "Towards 2020 Science"

http://research.microsoft.com/towards2020science/background_overview.htm

This report apparently has inspired Nature, which has done a special focus

2020 - Future of Computing

Declan Butler has blogged about the special issue and bookmarked a vast number of links related to sensorwebs.

Nature's report reminds me of two very interesting articles in Science last year:

Cyberinfrastructure for E-Science
Science 6 May 2005:
Vol. 308. no. 5723, pp. 817 - 821
DOI: 10.1126/science.1110410

and

Service-Oriented Science
Science 6 May 2005:
Vol. 308. no. 5723, pp. 814 - 817
DOI: 10.1126/science.1110411

Microsoft has issued a CFP

Towards 2020 science: modelling and predicting in biology and earth sciences
Application form must be submitted online by 7 June 2006, midnight GMT.

UPDATE 2006-03-24: MS 2020 links via CNI-announce (a forwarded email I received, since I refuse to subscribe to mailing lists).
