(Grease)Monkeywrenching the Library

Lorcan Dempsey points out that the Access 2005 presentation (Grease)Monkeywrenching the Library: utilizing the sloppy underbelly of the web to expose our collections and services is available.

I call this "live where your users are".
You can find CISTI's experiments in this area at CISTI Lab,
and more information about how to get started at Library Success: Web Browser Extensions.

I presented for 15 minutes on this topic at Internet Librarian International 2005, but I didn't get to a key point that I wanted to make: you can use browser extensions to transform page content.  Want your resources highlighted in Google Scholar search results?  Want an icon next to things available from your library to appear on a page from somewhere else?  All of this is possible.

Access 2005 next week in Edmonton

Access 2005 is coming up October 16-19, 2005 in Edmonton, Alberta.  I have never been and I won't be there this year (hey, I can't be everywhere).  It will be in Ottawa next year.  I'm told it is a very good library tech conference.

CISTI's Glen Newton will be presenting Federated Searching in an Age of Web Services with Michael Fortin.

Lots of other CISTI people will also be attending.

Lorcan Dempsey to keynote at Access 2005

I strongly suggested to the planning group for Access 2006 in Ottawa that Lorcan Dempsey would be an interesting speaker, based on the ideas in Lorcan's blog.

It appears the Access 2005 (Edmonton) planners have gotten there first: Access 2005 Keynote Added.

The library and the network
Lorcan Dempsey

Topic: There are nodes and networks. In a material world, the node provides entry and aggregation opportunities. In a dematerialized world, the network, or networks, become much more important. This presentation will explore some ways in which library functions switch from the node to the network, and some of the service and organizational implications that flow from this.

Access 2005 conference

Access 2005
October 17th - 19th, 2005 - Edmonton Alberta Canada

My co-worker Stephen has been to lots of these and says they're very good.
The website is in WordPress, so that's a good start.

I think it's fairly accurate to say that the Access conferences focus on library technology.

I propose conference tag: Access2005.
