Reading Computing Chris, the blog of an Elsevier Publishing Editor, Chris Leonard (via Confessions of a Science Librarian).
In Wikis and scientific communication he writes
Wikis are attracting increasing attention due to the success of Wikipedia, which seems to have passed the tipping point from geeky resource to something your Aunt Maisie might use. However, I still see little application of them in scientific research (although maybe I am missing some sites). Here are a couple of ways in which I think wikis could be used as a future communication method, especially in publishing:
- OOP wikis - Books that go Out Of Print
- Article wikis
- Reference works
Personally I think they may be useful as a collaboration tool and knowledge repository.
I suspect an article wiki would turn into a disaster in the same way that the LA Times editorial wiki did.
Chris then links to an interesting wiki-presentation from Wikimania05: Wikis for scientific publishing.
