I sill have some major issues with Second Life as a platform for much more than sitting around a virtual campfire. Stability and scalability is one aspect, but also the display system is not designed to handle text well. You can do "this is a red ball next to a green box" well, and "watch this QuickTime media" well, but not "read this complex text with diagrams".
So when I attended a virtual science conference in SL, I found it a bit of a frustrating experience. I couldn't easily read the posters, it was awkward.
The conference is at Lupus (225, 125, 31).
