the Government of Canada will focus on six areas for action:
- promoting an entrepreneurial and creative society
- supporting global science excellence
- building world-leading clusters and partnerships
- growing companies and accelerating clean growth
- competing in a digital world
- improving ease of doing business
press release - Building an inclusive and innovative Canada - June 14, 2016
The Innovation Agenda will look at how to strengthen applied research while promoting partnerships with businesses so that the knowledge and discoveries generated in the lab make their way to the market.
In other words, support for world-class research is critical to making innovation a national priority.
Speech: Launch of Innovation Agenda – Minister Duncan (Minister of Science) - June 14, 2016
The ideas market has launched, you can follow the short link for more information at canada.ca/innovation which will take you to the ISED site http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/062.nsf/eng/home or go directly to the ideas market site at

You can also tweet ideas, using hashtag #CdnInnovation
As well, the government has opened a two-week window of consultation on Reddit, which I think means it will close July 6, 2016.
There was a National Press Gallery event (which the above speech is from) and a Canada 2020 event at the Chateau Laurier. The Canada 2020 event was livestreamed and the archive is available on YouTube.
I particularly recommend the presentation by Zayna Khayat, which runs from 41:44 to 57:50. This link will start the video at that time: https://youtu.be/XwyRybnBiMI?t=41m44s
A reminder that the innovation strategy consultation is running in parallel with three other potentially-relevant consultations:
- consultation on support for fundamental science
- consultation on draft Open Government Action Plan 2016-2018 (including open science) closing June 30, 2016
- consultation on revisions to Access to Information closing June 30, 2016
