The new Sony GPS-CS1KASP features
- two new letters in the model name
- the same low-sensitivity ( -150dBm ) 12-channel chipset
- the same AA, non-rechargeable battery
- (presumably, since there is no indication of any hardware change) the same Mac incompatibility
- an armband (which would be roughly like strapping a roll or two of quarters to your arm - this is not some flat little iPod)
- some way of mapping videos (which you can do right now with GPS coordinates in YouTube anyway)
- suggested retail of U$150
In other words: Sony GPS-CS1, now with new hat.
And what did Sony do last year? Last year's Sony GPS-CS1KA featured
- two new letters in the model name
- the same low-sensitivity ( -150dBm ) 12-channel chipset
- the same AA, non-rechargeable battery
- a carrying case
- the promise that its log files and software were compatible with all camera models (which was the case already anyway)
- persistent Mac incompatibility issues (it has never worked with the PowerPC Mac)
Any predictions for next year? The GPS-CS1KASPNG?
Sony broke new ground when it announced the CS1 model in August 2006 at $150. But this is 2008. In 2008 I can get GPS loggers for under $100 with better features than the Sony (I can practically get two GPS loggers for the price of the Sony). It is astonishing to see Sony cede this market space to more innovative and more agile players. Forget the Sony. I cannot recommend it. Check out my GPS logger comparison spreadsheet and it will be abundantly clear that Sony is at the back of the pack.

UPDATE 2009-02-08: Sony has finally announced a true successor to the GPS-CS1, the GPS-CS3KA.
