Update 3.90 for No Man's Sky is Expedition 7: Leviathan, starting a six week expedition as of May 25, 2022.
The time-limited expedition model is a clever one, as it gives you new motivation to get back into the game. I find the No Man's Sky endgame can get a bit tedious, once you have built lots of bases with lots of automated mines and have a full set of support with a freighter, frigates and fighters there's not a lot more to do other than just endlessly explore.
The rewards can also incentivize people to try out different parts of the game, for example in hundreds of hours of playing I'd not done any of the underwater things, but Expedition 6: The Blighted had underwater as part of its progress, and I discovered that underwater is basically an entire minigame in and of itself.
Expedition 7 has some sort of timeloop. It starts you off with some materials and a freighter, but no base computer blueprint. It sets up a bit of dilemma as you could play through for a while with your starting materials, but in order to get the Base Computer you need to die (yes, to die) in order to get the blueprint as a death reward. You might think you can just plan it out and die next to your spaceship so that you can find your grave easily, but it's permadeath so when you respawn you have not only lost almost everything, but your spaceship is in a completely different location.
It's interesting so far, I've only played it briefly.
